Initial Consultation
Before you book in for electrolysis hair removal, you will need a consultation with Katie who is a hair removal specialist. During the consultation, she will make sure you are suitable for electrolysis, discuss which areas you would like to treat, medical history, how the treatment works, what to expect and aftercare.
Katie will also carry out a patch test and taster session for your safety and for you to get an idea of what to expect. This ensures that electrolysis hair removal is the right solution for you.
During Electrolysis Hair Removal
Please arrive at your appointment with clean skin, free of any makeup or products. It is important that you stop using any retinol/retinoid treatments or chemical exfoliators for at least two weeks before your appointment.
During treatment, Katie will make sure you are comfortable before the fine single use sterile probe will be inserted into the hair follicle, cauterising the blood supply.
Current passes through the follicle for about two seconds, destroying it and preventing future growth. The hair can then be gently removed using sterile tweezers.
A soothing after care lotion will be applied at the end of the treatment.
After Treatment
After treatment, the skin may be a little red. This will usually go down within 24 hours, but it is important that you do not rub or touch the treated area during this time. You can expect some mild scabbing and a sensation that feels similar to mild sunburn. This is completely normal and will only be experienced for a short period of time.
We recommend that you stay out of direct contact with the sun for at least 24 hours after electrolysis hair removal, wearing a hat and sunscreen where possible.

Electrolysis hair removal works by permanently destroying each individual hair follicle with a very fine, disposable and sterile probe combined with direct current. After this process, the hair follicle can no longer reproduce.
Usually, a series of sessions is needed to completely prevent hair growth. If the hair growth is caused by a hormonal imbalance, the process may be slower but is still possible.
Typically electrolysis treatments have had a bad rap for being uncomfortable. Apilus electrolysis changes this however, and instead of having to hold the probe in the follicle for up to and over 15 seconds (which is the norm with other electrolysis machines), treatment on each individual hair is typically over within less than 4 seconds. I liken it to saying, by the time you feel anything, the treatment on that hair is already over. Although the treatment is not 100% pain free, it is a much more comfortable, gentle treatment than traditional electrolysis methods.
Apilus treatment is very gentle, and you’ll only feel a slight heat or pinch sensation in the area being treated. It’s worth noting that individual tolerances do vary, and different areas on the body are more sensitive than others, but most people find the treatment completely fine. If you have tried electrolysis previously, you will be very pleasantly surprised at the difference!
The number of treatments will vary depending on the client, their hair type, what area and how much hair is being treated. There are also other factors to consider, such as hormones, medication, stress influence and client time commitment.
It can take approximately 12-18 months of regular appointments to remove the hairs. Please bear in mind that to start with, treatments will be close together, becoming more spaced out as time goes on. This does not take into account any personal factors such as medication or hormones.
Treatments are worked out by how many ‘minutes’ you will need. So if you have an area with alot of hair then you will need a longer treatment session than someone who has less hair to be treated. How much time you will need for each treatment will be discussed in the consultation.
The hair needs to be around 2mm in length, the hair needs to be long enough to grab with the tweezers. You would roughly need to leave the hair 3 to 4 days after shaving.
The hair must not leave the hair follicle unless with electrolysis. In between treatments cutting or shaving is recommended. You must not wax or tweeze, this can hinder the treatments and it can take longer for the hair to go.
No-one can ever give you a 100% guarantee that no hair regrowth will occur following electrolysis. We would advise caution before using any clinic that claims otherwise. However we stand behind our experience of permanently removing the hairs we treat.
Your skin may be red and feel hot to touch, possibly a little swollen straight after the treatment. This is normal, due to the heat being produced in the skin. You may want to apply a cold compress after. Ensure that you follow the aftercare advice given.
Occasionally, scabs form to protect the skin from infection and ensure your skin heals smoothly. Even if the scabs itch or look like pimples, do not remove them until they fall off or you risk scarring.
Some skin types (people with olive or darker coloured skin) are more prone to getting temporary marks on the skin. People with higher moisture content in their skin are more prone to develop scabbing. People with oily skin have a higher chance of break-outs and, if they pick at their skin, this can lead to scarring.
After the treatment you must ensure you take the following precautions for the next 24/48 hours after, so your skin can heal properly.
Avoid sunbathing or any other heat treatments (e.g. saunas, sunbeds, steam bath).
Avoid hot baths or showers.
Avoid swimming.
Avoid applying make-up to the treated area.
Avoid applying soap or perfumed products to the treated area.
Avoid wearing tight clothing over treated body areas.
Avoid touching the area and do not pick any scabs that may form.
Electrolysis is suitable for everyone and all hair colours. As it treats the individual hair, and destroys the hairs ability to produce more hairs within the follicle. Electrolysis is the only answer for people with blond, white, and red hair.
